Why this exists, and how it works

Independent, by design

This isn't run by a large charity or a company with something to sell. It's built for the muscular dystrophy community, by people in it — a place to ask the questions that feel too small or too specific for anywhere else, hear from people living the same thing, and find things out in plain English.

Nothing here is invented. News write-ups, stories, small wins, guides, member profiles — all of it is real submissions from real people, or left honestly empty until someone posts. A health community site shouldn't need to fake activity to feel alive.

No ads, no trackers, nothing sold

There's no advertising on this site and no third-party analytics or tracking scripts wired in — nothing here is watching what you read or selling it on. The site doesn't ask where you are, either: there's no location field anywhere in it.

Privacy by design, not as an afterthought

A few things are missing from this site on purpose:

• No online status, no "last seen", no read receipts, no typing indicators. Nobody can see when you're active, whether you've read something, or whether you're currently typing — anywhere on the site, including messages.
• Messaging is consent-first. Nobody can message you out of nowhere — they send a request explaining why, and you choose whether to accept. You can also pause all new requests, or restrict who can reach you at all, any time from your account settings.
• Stories have real visibility control. Every story you write can be set to public, members-only, or just moderators — and you choose that per story, not once for everything you ever write.

Your data, and your right to remove it

A lot of what people share here — conditions, symptoms, care needs — is health data, and health data gets special protection under UK data protection law (Article 9 of UK GDPR). We take that seriously in practice, not just in a policy document. The data controller is MD Community CIC (company number 17455721) — the organisation legally responsible for your data and the one to contact with any data protection question or request.

• Deleting your account genuinely deletes your data. Not a hidden flag — your Hospital Passport, Emergency Contact Card, PIP tools, stories, messages, small wins and everything else personal to you is permanently removed from the database. You can do this yourself, any time, from your account page.
• If you started a discussion or wrote a guide other members have built on, deleting your account removes your name and your own words from it, but leaves the thread standing so it doesn't take other people's replies and contributions down with it.
• Nothing lingers where it shouldn't. Once something's deleted, its page stops existing — there's nothing left for a search engine to keep showing.

Moderation and safety

Staff review every report — on threads, replies, stories, guides, and message requests — and can act on it. Anyone posting or messaging about unregulated "treatments" or miracle cures gets removed the same day; this community exists to share what's real, not to be a marketplace for what isn't. Messaging between an adult and someone under 18 isn't possible in either direction, no exceptions.

Who's behind it

This site is small right now, run by real named moderators as the community grows rather than a large anonymous team — profiles will appear here as they come on board. If you spot something that needs a moderator's attention in the meantime, use the report link wherever you see it, or suggest a change on anything that's wrong.

The site itself is operated by MD Community CIC, a Community Interest Company registered in England and Wales (company number 17455721) — a legal structure built specifically for organisations whose purpose is a community benefit, not private profit, which matches what this site has been from the start.
